Survivorship is the traditional Mitakshara rule under which a deceased coparcener's interest in coparcenary property automatically passes to the surviving coparceners, rather than to the deceased's own heirs by inheritance. The 1956 and 2005 reforms significantly altered this default rule for many situations.
Historically, if one of three brothers who were coparceners died, his interest was simply absorbed by the other two — it did not pass to his own widow or children through inheritance.
Schools of Hindu Law — Mitakshara and Dayabhaga; Joint Family, Coparcenary and Coparcenary Property.
Survivorship is a purely Mitakshara concept — Dayabhaga never recognised it, since a Dayabhaga coparcener's interest only ever arises after the last owner's death, by inheritance from the start.
