A coparcenary is the narrower body within a Mitakshara joint family whose members acquire an interest in ancestral property by birth — traditionally the common ancestor plus three generations of lineal male descendants, and since 2005, daughters too. Courts describe it as "a creature of law" that cannot be created by agreement.
A father, his son, and his grandson together form a coparcenary over ancestral land — each has a birthright share the moment they're born, long before any partition takes place.

Coparcenary property is not the same as joint family property — all coparcenary property is joint family property, but joint family property can also include property from other sources (like a validly blended separate property) that doesn't automatically carry the same birthright incidents.
