Mitakshara is the school of Hindu law based on Vijnaneshwara's 11th-century commentary on the Yajnavalkya Smriti. It prevails across almost all of India (except Bengal and Assam) and is built on the doctrine of coparcenary by birth.
A Hindu family in Hyderabad follows Mitakshara: a son becomes a coparcener in ancestral property the day he is born, not when his father dies.
Schools of Hindu Law — Mitakshara and Dayabhaga; underlies the whole of Joint Family, Coparcenary, Karta, and Partition.
Mitakshara is not a single uniform rulebook — it has four regional sub-schools (Benares, Mithila, Maharashtra/Bombay, Dravida/Madras) that differ on specific points while all treating the Mitakshara text as supreme.
