Libel is defamation in a permanent, visible form — typically writing, print, pictures, or broadcast — and, unlike slander, it is actionable per se: the plaintiff need not prove any actual financial loss.
A newspaper prints a false story alleging that a doctor performed a surgery while negligent and unfit to practise. Because the false statement is in print, the doctor can sue for libel without having to show that any patient actually left as a result.
Covered in Unit IV, Post 1 alongside slander, as the two forms into which every defamation claim must be classified.
Don't assume libel is only about newspapers. Anything in a permanent or recorded form — a broadcast TV programme, a recorded video, or even a defamatory statement embodied in a statue or effigy — is treated as libel, not slander, in most jurisdictions.
