The doctrine of common employment was an old common-law defence under which an employer was not liable to one employee for injury caused by a fellow employee's negligence, if both were engaged in a "common employment" at the time.
Before the doctrine's abolition, a factory worker injured by a co-worker's carelessness on the same shop floor could not recover from their common employer, on the theory that each worker impliedly accepted the risk of a fellow worker's carelessness as an ordinary risk of the job.
Unit 2, Post 2 on Vicarious Liability, discussed as a piece of legal history — abolished in England by statute and never taking firm root in India, being displaced by workmen's compensation legislation.
Don't treat this as a currently applicable defence in India. It survives today only as legal history explaining why, before statutory workmen's compensation existed, an injured worker's claim against a common employer so often failed — it has no live application in a modern Indian tort claim.
