Consumerism — వినియోగదారు ఉద్యమం

Glossary
Law of Torts

The organised social and political movement asserting that consumers, as a class, are entitled to protection against unfair, deceptive, or unsafe business practices — the pressure that directly produced India's consumer protection legislation.

Real-life example

Consumer advocacy groups campaign publicly against food adulteration and lobby Parliament for stronger safety standards — this organised pressure, not any single lawsuit, is what led to India's Consumer Protection Act.

Where you'll come across this

The subject of Unit 5, Post 2 in full — the movement's history, its shift from caveat emptor to caveat venditor, and its link to the Consumer Protection Act.

Common mix-up

Consumerism is not itself a source of enforceable legal rights — it is the social movement that explains why the Consumer Protection Act exists at all, not a provision you can cite in a complaint.
