A consumer is any person who buys goods or hires/avails a service for consideration, for personal use — not for resale or commercial purpose, except goods bought exclusively to earn one's livelihood through self-employment.
A tailor buys a sewing machine to stitch and sell garments as their sole means of livelihood, operating it personally. Even though the purchase supports a business, the tailor is still a "consumer" under the Act's self-employment exception.
The subject of Unit 5, Post 4 in full — the statutory definition, the commercial-purpose exclusion, and its self-employment carve-out.
Not everyone who pays for something is a "consumer" under the Act. A trading company buying goods in bulk for resale is excluded as acting for a "commercial purpose" — the exclusion turns on the purpose of the purchase, not the price paid or the quantity bought.
