Common mix-up

Protection is not a synonym for conservation, even though everyday English sometimes uses them loosely together. Conservation is about how a resource is used (sustainably); protection is about the legal machinery that stops harmful acts from happening in the first place. A resource can be conserved without any active legal protection being needed — and a resource can be protected by law even while remaining otherwise un-conserved.
