Polygamy —

Glossary
Family Law-I

Polygamy is the state of having more than one spouse at the same time. It has two forms: polygyny (one husband, several wives) and polyandry (one wife, several husbands). For Hindus, section 5(i) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 bans it.

Real-life example

A Hindu man who marries a second woman while his first wife is alive and undivorced practises polygamy. The second marriage is void under section 11 and the man is liable for bigamy.
