Biological resources include plants, animals, micro-organisms or parts of their genetic material and derivatives (excluding value added products), with actual or potential use or value for humanity. They do not include human genetic material. This is the meaning in section 2(c) of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
A medicinal plant found in a forest and used by a tribal community is a biological resource. A company that wants to collect it for a commercial drug needs the approval the Act requires.
