The Cripps Mission, 1942 was a British mission sent to India during the Second World War, in which the British Government, for the first time, accepted in principle that Indians should frame their own constitution after the war — though the actual mechanism for doing so was worked out only later.
The Cripps proposals also offered provinces the right to opt out of the future Indian union — a concession that mattered later, since a similar opt-out logic shaped how Partition itself eventually proceeded in 1947.
Framing of the Indian Constitution — The Constituent Assembly.
The Cripps Mission only won acceptance "in principle" — it did not itself create the Constituent Assembly or fix how it would be formed. That concrete mechanism came four years later, from the Cabinet Mission Plan, 1946.
