Consideration —

Glossary
Law of Contract-I

Consideration is whatever one side gives, does, or promises in exchange for the other side's promise — it's the price the law demands before it will step in and enforce an agreement. Without it, a promise is usually treated as a bare, unenforceable gesture rather than a binding obligation.

Real-life example

A tutor agrees to teach a student mathematics for two hours every weekend in exchange for ₹2,000 per session. The tutor's time and teaching is the consideration flowing to the student; the ₹2,000 is the consideration flowing back to the tutor. If the tutor simply offered free lessons out of pure goodwill with nothing expected in return, there would be no consideration, and generally no contract the tutor could be legally forced to continue.

Where you'll come across this

Consideration is one of the true pillar concepts of the whole subject — it resurfaces in Unit I's essentials of a valid contract, in the doctrine of privity, and again whenever an exception to the "no consideration no contract" rule is being tested.

Common mix-up

A very common student error is assuming consideration must be roughly equal in value to what's received in return — a "fair deal." The law doesn't care about fairness of the bargain, only that something of real value was genuinely exchanged; courts have upheld consideration as low as a single rupee.
