Self-Contained Code —

Glossary
Law of Contract-I

A self-contained and exhaustive code: a statute that sets out its own procedure for the matters it covers. The Supreme Court, following the Constitution Bench in Re: Interplay, treated the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 as one: what it allows must be done only in the manner it indicates, what it does not mention cannot be done, and general procedure is impliedly excluded.

Real-life example

Non-signatories used Section 151 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 to get permission to attend an arbitration. The Supreme Court held the request went beyond Section 11(6) and Section 151 could not be invoked. It had earlier quoted Re: Interplay that the Act is a self-contained code under which what is not mentioned cannot be done.
