Past consideration is an act done before the promise was made, at the desire of the promisor. Section 2(d) of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 says consideration may be something the promisee or any other person "has done". So in India a past act done at the promisor's desire can support a later promise.
At Sita's request, Lata looks after Sita's shop for a month. Afterwards Sita promises Lata Rs 5,000 for the work. The past service was at Sita's desire, so her promise is supported by consideration.
As used in the note on consideration, under section 2(d). Section 25(2) separately covers a promise to compensate a voluntary past act.
Don't assume every past act supports a promise. The act must have been done at the desire of the promisor. A purely voluntary act is dealt with by section 25(2).
