As used in this case, the recording of a new holder's name for land after the earlier holder loses his rights, for example by death. Under section 86 of the Madhya Bharat Act, the patwari reports the fact to the Tehsildar, and a person claiming to succeed may apply for mutation within two years. The Court said the section applies to all classes of tenants and contemplates heritability and transferability.
