Literal Rule of Interpretation —

Glossary
Family Law-I

As used in this case, the first and foremost principle of interpreting a statute: where the words are clear and unambiguous, the court gives them their plain meaning. The judgment quotes the Supreme Court saying other rules, such as the mischief rule and purposive interpretation, apply only when the plain words are ambiguous, lead to no intelligible results, or would nullify the statute's object if read literally.

Real-life example

Defendant Nos. 10 and 11 argued that Section 6(1) of the Hindu Succession Act is clear and needs no interpretation. A daughter is a coparcener like a son, so no other reading is permitted.
