Family Law – I (Hindu Law)

As used in this case, helping or encouraging another person to commit an offence, charged here under Section 494 read with Section 114 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. The judgment does not define the word itself; it only records the charge and later sets aside the conviction because the main offence was not made out.

Real-life example

Deorao Shankar Lokhande, the brother of the man who married a second time, was convicted under Section 494 read with Section 114 IPC for abetting that marriage. The Supreme Court set aside his conviction along with his brother's, because the second marriage was never validly "solemnized".
