Glossary
Environmental Law

The sea area up to 200 nautical miles from the coast in which a coastal State has sovereign rights over living and non-living resources and a duty to protect the marine environment. In India it is fixed by the Territorial Waters, Continental Shelf, Exclusive Economic Zone and Other Maritime Zones Act, 1976, and under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982.

Real-life example

Fish and seabed minerals within 200 nautical miles of India's coast fall under India's sovereign rights, so India can regulate fishing and mining there and must protect the marine environment.
