Environmental Impact Assessment is the process of evaluating a proposed project's likely environmental effects before it is permitted to proceed, so that impacts can be identified, mitigated, or avoided at the planning stage rather than discovered afterward. In India, it is implemented through the EIA Notification, issued under Section 3 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
