Environmental Clearance (EC) — పర్యావరణ అనుమతి (EC)
A government approval that a listed project must obtain before it starts or expands, given only after steps such as screening, scoping, public hearing and appraisal. As used in the EIA notification of 27 January 1994, it is granted by the Central Government.

Three industries at Ankleshwar began production without an EC. They obtained ECs only between December 2002 and July 2003. The Supreme Court held that an EC must come before the project, never after.
