Deforestation — అటవీ నిర్మూలన

Deforestation is the large-scale clearing or removal of forest cover, typically to convert the land to agricultural, industrial, or urban use. It is distinct from selective logging, which removes individual trees while leaving the forest ecosystem largely intact.

Real-life example

A state government permits a mining company to clear several hundred hectares of standing forest to access coal deposits beneath it, without first obtaining the Central Government's approval required under the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam, 1980. This clearing is deforestation, and proceeding without approval is itself a contravention of Section 2 of that Act.

Common mix-up

Don't confuse deforestation with afforestation or reforestation. Deforestation removes forest cover; afforestation creates forest cover on land that was not previously forested; reforestation replants trees on land that was previously forested but had been cleared.
