Reservation —

Glossary
Constitutional Law-I

Reservation, in Articles 15 and 16, means setting aside a share of seats or posts for a named group. Article 16(4) lets the State reserve appointments or posts for a backward class that is not adequately represented in State services. Articles 15(6) and 16(6) add a separate reservation of up to ten per cent for economically weaker sections, in addition to the existing reservations. The Constitution does not define the word.
