Bail — బెయిల్ (Bail)

Glossary
Constitutional Law-I

As used in this case, the release of an accused person before trial, either on a personal bond or against sureties. The Court said the bail system then worked with a property-oriented approach, which treated the risk of money loss as the only reason an accused would not run away. The judgment does not give a formal definition.

Real-life example

Poor undertrial prisoners in Bihar stayed in jail for years because they could not afford bail. The Court ordered their release on personal bonds with no money to be paid.
