Reddendo singula singulis

Maxim
Interpretation
Literal meaningRendering each to each
Pronunciationred-DEN-doh SING-yoo-la SING-yoo-lis

When a sentence has several subjects and several actions, each subject is linked with its own action. It avoids a wrong reading of a sentence with two lists.

Example

A rule says 'soldiers and sailors shall be discharged from the army and navy'. Soldiers are discharged from the army and sailors from the navy.

Exceptions / limits

Use the rule only when the sentence cannot sensibly apply every item to every other item.

Exam tip

Short-note question. Use a simple example.

Memory trick

Match each to each.

Key takeaway

Read each item in one list with its matching item in the other.
