Conversion is dealing with another's goods in a manner inconsistent with their rights, so seriously as to amount to a denial of that right — through wrongful taking, detention, sale, or destruction of the goods.
In Armory v. Delamirie (1722), a chimney sweep's boy who found a jewel took it to a goldsmith for valuation; the goldsmith's apprentice removed the stones and refused to return them. The court held that even a finder's possession is protected against everyone but the true owner, and awarded damages for conversion.
Armory v.

Don't assume ownership is required to sue for conversion. Mere possession, even a finder's possession, is a legally protected interest — the plaintiff need only show a right to immediate possession good against the defendant, not absolute title against the whole world.
