Property that absolutely belongs to a Hindu woman in her own right — traditionally including gifts received before, during or after her marriage from relatives or others, her own earnings, and property acquired by her own skill.
The jewellery Meena's parents gave her at her wedding, and the money she has earned from her own tailoring business, are both her stridhan — she owns them absolutely, regardless of her marital status.
Section 14(1)'s Explanation expressly includes any stridhan a woman already held immediately before the Hindu Succession Act, 1956 commenced, confirming it as her full ownership — covered in the Notes post on Section 14 in this subject's Unit V.
Stridhan should not be confused with a limited estate — stridhan was always a woman's own absolute property even under the old law; a limited estate was property she merely held for her lifetime, without full ownership, until Section 14 changed that.
