As used in this case, a certificate the High Court issues under Article 133(1) of the Constitution, saying that a civil case is fit for appeal to the Supreme Court. It is a precondition for the appeal, but it does not limit the scope of what the Supreme Court may later examine.
The Andhra High Court's certificate named only three questions of law about wills. The respondent argued the appeal should be confined to those three questions. The Supreme Court rejected this: once a valid certificate is granted, the appeal covers the whole case, including the concurrent findings on adoption and partition.
As used in Addagada Raghavamma v. Addagada Chenchamma (Court's Reasoning, on the preliminary objection).
