An environmental pollutant is any solid, liquid or gaseous substance present in such concentration as may be, or tend to be, injurious to environment. This is the meaning in section 2(b) of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Untreated liquid waste from a tannery, discharged into a river in a quantity that harms the river, is an environmental pollutant. The same substance in a harmless quantity may not be.
As used in section 2(b) of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and in the note on the meaning and definition of environment.
Don't confuse an environmental pollutant with environmental pollution. The pollutant is the substance. Environmental pollution is the presence of that substance in the environment (section 2(c)).
