The Air Quality Index is a standardised numerical scale used to communicate how polluted the air currently is, based on measured concentrations of pollutants such as particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide against the standards a State Board is empowered to fix under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
