This is the sixth and final topic post in Unit I — Introduction to Environmental Law. Every concept covered so far — environment, ecosystem, biosphere, biodiversity, the atmosphere, and the ancient ethic of protection — converges on this topic: what happens when that balance breaks down, and why.
Unit II of this course covers the legal remedies available against pollution — but a remedy only makes sense once you understand precisely what is being remedied. This post gives you that foundation: what environmental degradation and pollution actually mean, the different kinds of pollution recognised in law and science, and the causes and effects that make this the single most litigated area of environmental law in India.
Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the environment through the depletion of resources, destruction of ecosystems, and the loss of biodiversity. It is the broader process; pollution is one of its principal causes and expressions.
Environmental pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or contaminants into the natural environment, resulting in adverse effects on living organisms, ecosystems, and the balance of nature. Pollution occurs when harmful substances accumulate beyond the environment's natural capacity to absorb or neutralise them, disrupting ecological equilibrium.
The precise statutory definitions of pollution under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 are covered in full in Unit III; this post covers the underlying concept common to all of them.

Causes are broadly natural and anthropogenic (human-induced), though human activity is responsible for the overwhelming majority of pollution today:

A factory near a river discharges untreated effluent — that is water pollution. Over the following years, fish populations decline, the surrounding wetland dries up, and nearby farmland becomes less fertile from contaminated groundwater — that broader, cumulative decline is environmental degradation. The pollution was the specific act; the degradation is what it caused over time. This is exactly why Unit II's remedies — common law actions like nuisance and strict liability, alongside statutory penalties — target the polluting act directly, as the most effective way to stop the wider degradation before it compounds.
