Glossary
Constitutional Law-I

The eleven civic obligations listed in Article 51A (Part IVA), added by the 42nd Amendment in 1976, that every Indian citizen owes to the nation — from respecting the Constitution to protecting the environment. Like Directive Principles, they cannot be enforced directly by a court.

Real-life example

Article 51A(g) obliges every citizen to protect the environment. No individual can be directly sued under this clause alone, but courts have used it alongside Article 21 to order the closure of polluting factories.

Where you'll come across this

Constitutional Law-I, Unit V; also relevant whenever a question compares Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties together.

Common mix-up

Fundamental Duties are often confused with Directive Principles because both are non-justiciable. The difference: Directive Principles instruct the State; Fundamental Duties instruct citizens.
