Federation — సమాఖ్య

A federation is a union in which sovereign power is divided between a central government and constituent units, each supreme within its own sphere. The Government of India Act, 1935 proposed an All-India Federation joining British India's provinces with acceding princely states — but this federal part of the Act never actually came into force, because too few princely states acceded before the Second World War intervened.

Because the federation never took effect, only the 1935 Act's provincial-autonomy part operated in practice, from the 1937 provincial elections onward — the "Federation of India" the Act named existed only on paper, never as a functioning government.

Common mix-up

Don't assume the "Federation of India" under the 1935 Act ever actually governed anything — it never came into force. This is a separate historical fact from India being a genuinely operating federal state today, under the 1950 Constitution.
